How Long Does Outdoor Furniture Last in Australia?

Twenty to thirty years for A-grade teak. Fifteen to twenty for a well-made powder-coated aluminium frame. Eight to twelve for rope and synthetic wicker before they start to look tired, and five to ten for good cushion covers. The cheap end of the market lasts three summers, sometimes two.

Why is there no single answer?

An outdoor setting is several materials with different clocks. A rope lounge chair has a frame, a weave, a cushion cover and a foam core, and they fail in that order reversed. The foam sags first, then the cover fades, then the rope loses its colour, and the frame is still fine.

Lifespan by material, in Australian conditions

Material Structural life Looks like new
A-grade teak (heartwood) 25-40 years 9-12 months golden, then silver-grey for decades
Powder-coated aluminium, marine-grade coat 15-20 years+ 10-15 years
Solution-dyed rope 10-15 years 8-12 years
Synthetic wicker (polyethylene, colour through fibre) 15+ years 10-15 years
Solution-dyed acrylic cushion covers 8-10 years 5-8 years
Microcement over a lightweight core (Byron) 15-20 years+ 10 years, then reseal

How long does teak outdoor furniture last?

Longer than anything else you can put outside. A-grade teak is saturated with natural oils that repel water and insects; our teak buyer's guide explains what the grade means. Left alone it goes from honey gold to silver-grey over nine to twelve months, and that surface change is a few microns deep.

How long does aluminium outdoor furniture last?

Aluminium itself does not rust; it forms a thin oxide skin and stops. A marine-grade coating system keeps its colour and gloss for ten to fifteen years in full Australian sun; what marine-grade actually means covers the coating and fittings in detail. Our aluminium ranges use quality marine-grade powder coating and stainless or aluminium fittings.

How long does rope outdoor furniture last?

The frame lasts as long as any aluminium or teak frame. Solution-dyed rope keeps its colour for eight to twelve years in full sun and does not absorb water, so it does not grow mould.

How long does synthetic wicker last?

Good polyethylene wicker, with pigment blended through the strand, is one of the longest-lived materials outdoors: fifteen years is ordinary.

How long do outdoor cushions last?

A solution-dyed cover keeps its colour for five to eight years; the open-cell quick-dry foam inside lasts a similar span. Two habits double a cushion's life: stand it on edge after rain, and keep sunscreen off it.

How long does a concrete outdoor table last?

Our Byron tables are microcement over a lightweight core, double-sealed against UV and stains; the concrete table guide has the full story. The core and surface last decades. The sealer is the part with a clock: reseal every year, sooner in full sun, and wipe wine, citrus and oil off the same evening.

What actually shortens the life of outdoor furniture?

  1. Standing water at the feet.

  2. Chips left bare on coated metal near the coast.

  3. Cushions stored wet.

  4. Aggressive cleaning: pressure washers, scourers, bleach. The complete care guide covers the right methods per material.

  5. Sealing dirt in by oiling or sealing without cleaning first.

Does the warranty tell you how long it will last?

No. A warranty covers manufacturing faults for a defined period; ours is a 24-month manufacturer's warranty for domestic use, excluding fair wear and tear, with commercial use assessed case-by-case. Judge lifespan by the materials and construction.

What Sissonne Outdoor uses

Every range in our catalogue is built from the long-lived column of the table: A-grade teak, marine-grade powder-coated aluminium, solution-dyed rope, ECOLENE® synthetic wicker, solution-dyed fabric covers over quick-dry foam, and microcement for the Byron tables. Both showrooms carry pieces that have lived outside for years.
